Who We Are
Scottish Building Federation has served the construction industry and in particular our member companies since 1895.
Whilst we are proud of our strong traditions and track record over 100 years, we are not complacent.
The needs of member companies in this 21st century are significantly different to those of 100 years ago. Today, our members operate in a dynamic and demanding sector and face many challenges in their daily work.
Our industry has, over the past 10-15 years, experienced significant changes in many working practices, including health and safety, procurement and quality management. Continual change is inevitable in our dynamic modern world and Scottish Building Federation has a major role to play in supporting our members in preparing for and tackling these challenges.
At around £10 billion, the industry contributes over 10% of the Scottish GDP and employs some 192,600 people. To put this into perspective, the Scottish construction industry is twice the size of the agriculture sector and almost three times the size of the combined utility services. Clearly the industry makes an enormous contribution, not only to the physical, but also the economic development of Scotland.
Ultimately, our overall aim is to ensure that the importance of the Scottish construction industry to Scotland’s economy and society is recognised and valued.
With such a large and diverse industry we feel, as an effective organisation with a dedicated, highly skilled team, we are speaking with authority on behalf of the industry as a whole and providing the highest standard of business support service to our members. Through fostering good working relationships with kindred bodies, across all disciplines, we encourage positive relationships between employers and trade unions, to the benefit of all those working within the industry.
