Loss of 30,000 Construction Jobs 'Requires Immediate Action to Get Firms Building'

Immediate action is required to get firms building, says SBF Chief Executive Michael Levack in response to the latest Labour Market Statistics issued by the Office of National statistics.

He said, "These latest figures show a further 7,000 jobs having been lost from the Scottish construction industry between July and September this year.  In total, our industry has now shed 30,000 jobs over the 12 months to September.

"Whatever strategy governments at Westminster and Holyrood are pursuing to kickstart our economy back into life, isn't working.  As an indicator of the health of the wider economy, such a big drop in construction industry employment should set alarm bells ringing.

"Grandiose announcements and long-term plans on infrastructure and capital investment are all very well.  But our industry faces a crisis that requires immediate action to get firms building straight away.

"I look forward to hearing a credible short-term plan of how ministers propose to tackle this crisis with the urgency it now requires."
